When the Nanny arrives as looking Human, one child disapproves immediately of it. A newly widowed father chooses a hi-tech solution for the nurturing of his young children and domestic needs. In fact, the line 'I sing the body electric' was not added until the 1867 edition. Its original publication, like the other poems in Leaves of Grass, did not have a title.
The poem is divided into nine sections, each celebrating a different aspect of human physicality. They feel more comfortable with this as "it isn't capable of love" and cannot replace their mother at all.
