Gone is the suite of uninspired "manager" programs?Program Manager, File Manager and Print Manager. The task bar has a button for each running program, offering a quick and easy way to switch between these programs. The conspicuous Start button on the standard task bar begs to he pressed, revealing cascading menus containing shortcuts to programs, recently used documents, configuration options, and help. A fully redesigned "document-centric" user-interface is easy to use and understand. Windows 95 offers far more than just excellent DOS compatibility. In many ways, Windows 95 is the best thing that ever happened to DOS. Multiple DOS programs can run simultaneously, each in its own fully configurable window.

A DOS program can run on the Windows 95 desktop in a window or in full screen mode. Windows 95 offers the ultimate break from the DOS past while retaining a compatibility with DOS programs that was never possible with Windows 3.x. So what makes this new release of Windows so interesting? And why does it offer educators such an exciting new platform from which to initiate the frightened new user into the world of computing? A change for the better is coming, and Windows 95 will be at the forefront.
Windows 95 is a paradigm shift for the computer industry: for the first time a company with the market penetration of Microsoft has released a world-class graphical operating system. Touting the upcoming 32-bit operating system as a powerful replacement for MS-DOS, Windows 3.1, and Windows for Workgroups 3.11, Microsoft spokespeople are justifiably excited.

If Microsoft has its way, Windows 95 will be the single biggest software release in the history of computing. So here it is, my first published words about Windows 95, the OS that would change everything and usher in the era of 32-bit GUI computing for the masses. Already a published co-author of a Visual Basic 3.0 book, I was contracted to write a book about Windows 95, and this preview-based on build 224 beta code-appeared in the Spring 1995 issue of BC Link, an internal newsletter for the Benjamin Cummings publishing company. Update, August 24th 9:15AM ET : Article updated to mention a web-based project this app is based on.In October 1994, I began working with the M2 release of Windows "Chicago," which went on to become known as Windows 4.0 and, finally, Windows 95. If you run into any issues with the app you can always reset the Windows 95 instance inside the app and start over again. Once it’s running it surprisingly only takes up around 200MB of RAM, even when running all of the old Windows 95 system utilities, apps, and games. The app its only 129MB in size and you can download it over at Github for both macOS and Windows. Sadly, Internet Explorer isn’t fully functional as it simply refuses to load pages.

Rieseberg has published the source code and app installers for this project on Github, and apps like Wordpad, phone dialer, MS Paint, and Minesweeper all run like you’d expect. Now nostalgia lovers can play around with Windows 95 in an electron app. Slack developer Felix Rieseberg is responsible for this glorious app, based on an existing web project that supports Windows 95, Windows 98, and a whole host of older operating systems. Today, someone has gone a step further and made Windows 95 into an app that you can run on macOS, Windows, and Linux.

We’ve seen Microsoft’s popular OS appear on the Apple Watch, an Android Wear smartwatch, and even the Xbox One. Windows 95 is the operating system that’s now used as a yardstick for what’s possible on modern devices and platforms.
